THIS SCREAMS AUs. Like, the first I could think of/it made me think of in no particular order :

1. John and Dean said that it was only an imaginary friend, that he would soon disappear. Well, he never did. Between his family trying to erase Lucifer without knowing how to, then Standford’s psychiatric’s exhortation to take a medical treatment, Sam would just like to be left alone enough time to find how to bring Lucifer to ‘real’ life.
2. Nick body died once, when Lucifer possessed Sam for the first time. Since then Nick’s mind, free of flesh but still bound by grief, anger and remorse, roams the earth as a ghost. Until he finds himself bound to Sam by an unexpected turn of event and discovers the importance of his not-quite afterlife.  [If there is connections between a vessel and an angel, then vessels have connections too, even if it’s only by blood. And very extended family doesn’t end in blood in time of Apocalypses.]
3. By saving people of a shapeshifter, Sam unexpectedly finds himself with a compagnon : one of the witnesses of the shapeshifter’s mischiefs and death won’t stop following him. Problem ? This guy keeps saying he’s the Devil and want to be exorcised. Second problem ? Sam is slowly beginning to believe him.
4. Lucien and Sam share a flat ; they’ve only known each other for a few months and met through an advert on the local paper. They’re both disillusionned by life due to their past, and soon discover that each one is pretty much the entire social circle of the other. And they’re not even really friends. So when Sam begins a journey to discover the truth behind his childhood, Lucien has nothing better to do than following him, and maybe discovering himself in the same time.
